Schumann Sechs Gedichte und Requiem, Op. 90
Debussy Trois Chansons de Bilitis
Schumann Frauenliebe und –leben, Op. 42

The first of the festival’s popular late-night candlelight recitals at St Mary’s Cathedral features Paula Murrihy, a Kerry-born mezzo soprano well on her way to international greatness, accompanied by pianist Caroline Dowdle.

Paula performs Debussy’s sensuous Trois Chansons de Bilitis along with two works from that most romantic of all the Romantics – Robert Schumann.

The Sechs Gedichte (Six Poems) are set to verses by another tortured soul, the poet Nikolaus Lenau, whilst Frauenliebe und leben follows the heart-rending course of a love affair – from first meeting, through courtship to marriage, children, death… and beyond.
